Interoperability between the ETH Domain Repositories

Description
Open research data (ORD) are essential for transparency, reproducibility, and scientific progress. Scientific publications generate valuable datasets, and the availability of data repositories in the ETH Domain supports sharing ORD according to FAIR principles. However, the relation of datasets with publications that describe them is often not properly tracked in the dataset metadata. Moreover, differences in metadata standards persist even across repositories within the ETH Domain, making research outputs difficult to discover and reuse by both people and machines.
Harmonizing metadata and strengthening links between publications and datasets are therefore key steps towards a more interconnected research ecosystem. To address this challenge, IntER defined a unified ETH metadata standard for research data based on the DataCite metadata schema and published in a report. The standard has been implemented by the data repositories and catalogues involved in the project: EnviDat, Materials Cloud Archive and PSI Data Catalog.
Notably, we were able to leverage the potential of this standardization by improving and expanding three middleware services: 1) the metadata enrichment pipeline for publications in DORA now includes links to related research data; 2) the library search tool displays results from participating data repositories; and 3) data from the participating repositories and catalogues is now listed in opendata.swiss, increasing their visibility and discoverability.
