The Research Data Services (RDS) Explorer was developed as part of the ETH ORD Central Info Point project to improve the visibility and discoverability of research data services and infrastructures across the ETH Domain. Researchers may not always be aware of the tools, platforms, infrastructures and support services available to them, either within their own institution or at other ETH Domain institutions. The RDS Explorer addresses this challenge by providing a central, structured catalogue that makes it easier to identify relevant services and connect with their providers.

Hosted in the Services section of the ETH Domain Open Research Data Portal, the RDS Explorer brings together curated information about services and infrastructures from the six ETH Domain institutions: ETH Zurich, EPFL, PSI, WSL, Empa and Eawag. Users can explore the catalogue through three main filters: what they need to do, who can use the service, and the type of support provided. The platform also offers service providers an opportunity to increase the visibility of their services and discover solutions developed at other institutions.

The RDS Explorer was developed through an iterative, collaborative process involving representatives from across the ETH Domain. A cross-institutional Sounding Board contributed to shaping the platform, while user testing and feedback informed the development of the service submission form, the catalogue structure and the filtering interface. A standardized submission and curation process was established to ensure consistent, reliable and useful service descriptions.

Following the completion of the Central Info Point project in March 2026, the RDS Explorer entered its operational phase. EPFL Library is responsible for its ongoing maintenance and content curation, supported by institutional Points of Contact and cross-institutional governance. The catalogue will continue to evolve as new services are added and existing information is reviewed and updated.

By facilitating the discovery of existing resources, encouraging knowledge exchange between institutions and increasing the visibility of research data support, the RDS Explorer contributes to a more connected research data management ecosystem across the ETH Domain.
